Haiti Is a Terrible Country. That’s Not America’s Problem to Solve.

A lot of people want both, but here’s the blunt reality: at the end of the day, it’s not our responsibility to protect people living in bad countries, and Haiti is one of those bad countries.

Haitians were granted temporary protected status (TPS) following a major earthquake in the country. Emphasis on temporary. The Biden administration and others kept extending it, with little regard for the communities impacted by Haitian migration or the purpose of TPS. 

The world contains many less-than-ideal nations. It’s not the responsibility of the United States, or the American taxpayer, to import these people or send billions of dollars to make their lives “better.” Their nations are poorly run, violence-ridden nightmares for a reason, and that reason usually has to do with the people who live in those nations. We’ve been told that colonialism is evil, so the Western nations that brought a modicum of civility and economic stability to places like Haiti washed their hands of it.

That everything fell apart afterward is not our fault, nor is it our problem.

Bringing people from those nations here, where we then refuse to demand that they assimilate to our laws and our culture, is a recipe for disaster. And it means that Americans now get to live in fear, too. I suppose if your goal is the equal misery of the entire globe, that would make sense. But the priority for the American government and the American people should be, well, the American people.

And it seems that not importing violent Haitian gang members would be a good place to start, and sending those who are here back is even better.
