WASHINGTON (TNND) — Health and Human Services Secretary Robert Kennedy Jr. said he’s far from being a germaphobe, given that he used to snort cocaine off of toilet seats at the height of his drug addiction.
The Kennedy scion divulged his old drug habits on comedian Theo Von’s podcast “This Past Weekend”. Like Kennedy, Von also is in recovery from cocaine addiction. The two talked about how they used to see each other at recovery meetings in Los Angeles.
Kennedy, who is more than 40 years sober, shared with Von daily meetings are a priority for him to ensure he stays sober. He began abusing drugs in the years after his father Robert Kennedy, the 1968 Democratic presidential candidate, was assassinated.
He has been arrested twice for drug possession.
“I know this disease will kill me if I don’t treat it, which for me means going to meetings every day,” Kennedy said. “It’s just bad for my life. So, for me, it was survival.”
Kennedy criticized how the COVID-19 pandemic forced in-person meetings to move online, calling it “heartbreaking” for those in the recovery process. He shared that he formed a “pirate group” of addicts who continued to meet in person amid the 2020 lockdowns.
“I mean for me, I said this when I came in, ‘I don’t care what happens, I’m going to a meeting everyday,’” Kennedy said. “I’m not scared of a germ, you know. I used to snort cocaine off of toilet seats. I know this disease will kill me. If I don’t treat it, which means going to meetings everyday, it’s just bad for my life. For me, it was survival.”
