Holiday travel peaks with millions expected at airports Sunday

As the holiday weekend draws to a close, today is anticipated to be the busiest day for travel, with millions taking to the roads and skies.

According to AAA, more than 122 million domestic travelers are expected during this end-of-year holiday season, with over 8 million flying. TSA projects a heavy traveler volume today, with 2.86 million domestic and international passengers expected to pass through airports.

Travelers are advised to prepare for potential weather issues and to allow extra time for airport procedures.

A mother and daughter at John Glenn International Airport shared their experience, saying, “It seems like we’re off to a good start so far, but hopefully we have good luck by getting through security.”

Another traveler, Latesha Roberts said she was shocked, “I was like oh my God we got to hurry up and get through here before we miss our flight.”

TSA offers several travel tips:

  • ensure you have a valid ID
  • avoid bringing wrapped gifts
  • pack intentionally

Travelers should use a gift bag for presents to allow for TSA inspection without damaging the wrapping. Additionally, start packing with an empty bag to avoid accidentally including prohibited items, such as liquids and certain foods over 3.4 ounces, inside carry-ons.
