House Republicans launch investigation into Rep. Ilhan Omar’s finances: report

House Republicans opened an investigation into Rep. Ilhan Omar, a Democrat who represents Minnesota, amid her “skyrocketing family wealth,” according to an exclusive report.

The New York Post on Saturday noted that staff attorneys with the House Oversight Committee are leading the probe into the Somali-born Omar.

“We’re going to get answers, whether it’s through the Ethics Committee or the Oversight Committee, one of the two,” Oversight panel Chairman Rep. James Comer, a Republican who represents Kentucky, told the media outlet.

Comer also said the lawyers “are exploring the extraordinary step of subpoenaing Omar’s spouse over his allegedly shady business practices,” per The Post.

The probe, according to the outlet, is focused on how Omar’s household assets increased significantly in recent years, prompting questions from GOP lawmakers about the source of the funds and whether they were properly disclosed under federal ethics rules.

Republicans said the inquiry will review financial records tied to Omar and her husband, Tim Mynett, whose consulting firm has done business with political organizations.

Investigators are expected to examine disclosure filings, outside income and business relationships to determine whether any ethics or disclosure violations occurred.

The Post said the lawyers are looking into on how Omar and Mynett “went from nearly broke to being worth up to $30 million in just a year,” citing 2024 disclosure documents.

“There are a lot of questions as to how her husband accumulated so much wealth over the past two years,” Comer told The Post. “It’s not possible. It’s not. I’m a money guy. It’s not possible.”

The media outlet noted that federal law enforcement is also conducting its own investigation.

“We are investigating all politicians potentially connected to any of this [fraud] in Minnesota. You can read between the lines,” an unnamed law enforcement source told The Post.

House Majority Whip Rep. Tom Emmer, a Republican who represents Minnesota, said the probe is long overdue.

“While Minnesotans have been getting fleeced to the tune of $9 billion by Somali fraudsters, Ilhan Omar and her husband have been raking in millions through their shady businesses,” he told the media outlet.

“The explosion of wealth, plus the fact that convicted fraudsters helped fund Omar’s campaign, is worth an investigation by the Ethics Committee at the very least,” he added.

Omar, who is a member of the progressive “Squad,” has faced scrutiny in the past over campaign finance issues and personal finances but has denied wrongdoing.

House Republicans have framed the probe as part of broader efforts aimed at enforcing transparency and ethics requirements for members of Congress.

Democrats, meanwhile, have accused Republicans of politically motivated investigations targeting high-profile progressive lawmakers.

The inquiry is still in its early stages, and no formal allegations or charges have been filed. Any findings would be referred to the House Ethics Committee or federal authorities for further review if warranted.
