Inmate dies at San Antonio hospital due to medical complications

SAN ANTONIO – An inmate receiving medical treatment at a San Antonio hospital has died.

According to the Bexar County Sheriff’s office, Juan Plata Peña Jr., 48, was pronounced deceased at Methodist Hospital around 3 p.m. on Saturday, due to complications related to a previously diagnosed medical condition. Peña had been receiving specialized medical care since early December.

Peña’s custodial history spans multiple counties. He was arrested on April 22, 2025, on a charge of online solicitation of a minor involving sexual conduct. On November 4, he was transferred from Bexar County to Burnet County.

Peña became ill on November 20, and was transported from the Burnet County Jail to a hospital. He again became ill on December 4 and was taken to a hospital a second time. Later that day, Peña was transferred from the Burnet County Jail to Methodist Hospital in San Antonio for specialized medical care, where he remained until his death.
