Jasmine Crockett trails state lawmaker in US Senate primary poll

Texas Democratic Representative Jasmine Crockett is trailing state Democratic Representative James Talarico in a U.S. Senate primary poll published Thursday.

Crockett is nine points behind Talarico, a 36-year-old, four-term legislator, in the survey, which was conducted by Emerson College and Nexstar Media Group last weekend. Forty-seven percent of likely Democratic primary voters said they would vote for Talarico, while 38% predicted a vote for Crockett.

The candidates have mostly focused on their own campaigns, rather than each other’s, ahead of the March primary election. Talarico told reporters on Thursday that there’s still a lot of work to do before then, noting that the race is very competitive.

“We are gonna keep going out to every corner of this state and trying to earn the trust and the respect and the support of every Texan,” the lawmaker said.

The National News Desk requested comment from Crockett on her standing in the race but hasn’t received a response. She said earlier this year that her campaign was building momentum, though, which she was going to carry into the primary.

Whoever wins that election will likely face off against either current Senator John Cornyn or state Attorney General Ken Paxton, two of the Republican candidates. Both lead Crockett and Talarico in the Emerson and Nexstar poll.
