Vice President JD Vance lauded President Trump as the antithesis of the typical Washington D.C. persona. While most in the nation’s capital are insincere, calculating, and constantly maneuvering for advantage, Vance argued, Trump is refreshingly genuine, acting the same in person as he does on camera.
“If Washington is an insincere place, I think you said that and said it well. He is like the polar opposite,” Vance said during an interview on Wednesday with Megyn Kelly. “He just says what’s on his mind. He doesn’t care how anybody’s going to react to it. What you see is what you get. And people always ask, ‘Well, what does he look like in private?’ He is in private exactly like he is in front of a camera.”
While many members of the press seem to despise the president, Vance argued that most of them like him, even if they can’t admit it.
“There are some members of the press who kind of like him for it, and some members of the press who don’t; for most members of the press, it’s a little bit of both,” he continued. “They admire the game, even if for some political reason, they just can’t admit that they actually like him. But most of them actually do.”
“They hate themselves for laughing,” Kelly said.
“Exactly, exactly,” Vance replied. He then recalled a moment when the president called out CNN’s Kaitlan Collins for never smiling, noting that even if you take your job seriously, there’s no reason not to enjoy it, or to be constantly antagonistic.
“There was a moment in the Oval Office, I wasn’t even in there, I was in the West Wing, and somebody sent me, where he is talking to Kaitlin Collins, who’s the CNN anchor,” the vice president said. “And I have, like, a decent relationship with Kaitlin Collins, which is unusual given that she’s from CNN. She’s asking a question, and the president says, ‘Why don’t you ever smile?'”
“And it’s actually like so perceptive, even if you’re asking a tough question, even if you take your job very seriously. Like, why does it always have to be so antagonistic?” he added.

Vance is simply echoing what many Americans already see in the president. After years of consistent lies, pervasive insincerity in government, and the constant stream of political spin, Trump represents a kind of breath of fresh air. What you see is what you get. It may not always be kind or polished, but it’s straightforward. And in a political landscape starved for honesty, President Trump’s authenticity is what American politics needs
