A man was given a sentence of up to life in prison after he was convicted of beating a woman, telling her she “was going to die,” and locking her in a basement storage room.

Samuel Shroy Martindale was convicted for 15 years to life for the charge of aggravated kidnapping and up to five years for two charges of aggravated assault.

Martindale was originally arrested in February 2024 after he became upset and began yelling at and attacking the victim, according to the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office.

As the victim attempted to hide in a bathroom, Martindale followed and used the toilet bowl lid as a weapon while telling her she would not be leaving the room alive. He later tied the victim up and dragged her out of the bathroom before locking her into a storage room in the basement at knifepoint.

The victim was only saved after she received a phone call from a friend during the assault. Martindale made her answer the call and claim she was fine. When the call was answered, she yelled out to call the police, which prompted a further assault.

When police arrived, the victim was found with serious injuries, including cuts and heavy bruising to her face and body. Martindale was found with blood on his shirt, boots and pants.

“In Salt Lake County, we will vigorously prosecute those defendants that cause harm to others. And we will especially take notice of those defendants that cause harm to loved ones that have offered shelter and safety,” said Salt Lake County DA Sim Gill. “The victim in this case opened up her home to the defendant, only to be viciously attacked. We will not tolerate this behavior.”

The DA’s office said Martindale’s charge for aggravated kidnapping will run consecutively to the aggravated assault charges and charges from other cases. The two aggravated assault charges will run concurrently to each other, but consecutively to all other prison sentences.
