PALM BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — According to Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw, a man with a gas can and a shotgun entered Mar-a-Lago property around 1:30 a.m. The man was shot and killed after “unauthorized entry” into the Mar-a-Lago perimeter.
The man was confronted by law enforcement and ordered to drop the equipment. The man dropped the gas can, but raised his shotgun into a shooting position. He was shot and killed by officers.
The incident took place at one of the gates to Mar-a-Lago. The name of the individual shot has not yet been released.
The Secret Service said the suspect, a male in his early 20s, was shot by two U.S. Secret Service agents and a PBSO deputy. No law enforcement officers were injured.
The FBI is leading the investigation with PBSO assisting. They are asking for anyone living around Mar-a-Lago to share any video surveillance they may have showing the man around the time of the incident, and for the public to report anything suspicious to the FBI or PBSO.
Bradshaw said he is not sure who shot the man, how many shots were fired, or if the suspect’s shotgun was loaded.
Federal and local law enforcement agencies held a news briefing Sunday morning to discuss an overnight investigation at Mar-a-Lago, President Trump’s Palm Beach residence and private club.
President Trump stayed in Washington this weekend and was never in danger because of the incident.
The list of speakers this morning includes Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw, Rafael Barros, the Special Agent in Charge of the Miami division, and FBI special agent Brett Skiles.
Southern Boulevard is currently closed to incoming traffic on the island. Deputies are directing traffic at a checkpoint at the light before the bridge.
