Melania Brings Russia and Ukraine to the White House

First Lady Melania Trump brought Ukrainian and Russian officials focused on the Oleshky, Ukraine, ceasefire last week to the White House on Thursday, as the war continues to drag on while broader trilateral talks loom large.

“Let Oleshky be the modest spark that grows into a lasting flame of peace,” she said at the Thursday event highlighting the ceasefire she played a major role in brokering.

The localized ceasefire led to humanitarian assistance getting to the Russian-occupied city, as many residents wanted to evacuate but struggled to leave due to the high number of landmines on the route out of the community. The First Lady’s Office said roughly 800 people were able to leave during the ceasefire.

Dmytro Lubinets, Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights, and Russian Special Envoy Kirill Dmitriev were among those in attendance for the event.

“Now, we must use the courage we brought to Oleshky to find common ground through a shared concern for the suffering of innocent people,” Trump said, according to a press release from her office.

“Together, we can create something more enduring than a temporary ceasefire. Let us see Oleshky as a spark in a world of darkness, capable of illuminating the best in humanity. Build a powerful flame of peace, visible to the world. Ignite hope, foster cooperation, and brighten a path toward lasting peace,” she added, with her office noting that it’s believed to be the first time two warring nations have had officials convening at the White House “for diplomacy.”

Lubinets said in an X post that the First Lady was awarded with the “Order of Princess Olga, First Class.”

“People who had been living for months in dire conditions —without water, food, or medicine — were literally snatched from the jaws of death thanks to the compassion, humanity, and big heart of the First Lady of the United States,” he wrote, also noting her Russia-Ukraine child reunification efforts.

The Russian envoy said that she was gifted a drawing “from 11-year-old Lydia, who was evacuated from Oleshky to Tuapse.”

As for a lasting ending to the conflict, it remains to be seen, but talks are still ongoing. U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff posted earlier this week that there will be further “working-level” conversations in Abu Dhabi next Tuesday and Wednesday.

“Discussions will focus on post-war security arrangements, de-escalation, humanitarian efforts, and next steps toward peace,” Witkoff wrote.

“Additionally, American negotiators will meet this week in Brussels with representatives from France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the EU, and NATO to discuss security guarantees for Ukraine, Europe’s post-war security architecture, and economic opportunities to support Ukraine’s reconstruction,” he continued.
