The temporary ceasefire in Oleshky, Ukraine, came to an end over the weekend, which First Lady Melania Trump and leaders from both Russia and Ukraine said went well.

The Russian-controlled city has faced a serious humanitarian crisis, which resulted in the need to remove landmines and get critical aid into the community with many elderly residents, as well as help people leave that wished to do so.

“The mission was a success, delivering critical aid to the region and enabling the evacuation of nearly 800 people,” Trump posted to her X on Sunday.

“On behalf of America, I commend Russia and Ukraine for their leadership and cooperation surrounding the Oleshky ceasefire.  I hope Oleshky serves as a foundation for lasting peace between both nations,” she continued. “The ceasefire began on October 27, 2026, and concluded on November 1, 2026, as planned.”

Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights Dmytro Lubinets said that “both sides honoured their commitments” throughout the course of the meticulously planned effort that was announced in October.

“This made it possible to deliver humanitarian aid to Oleshky and help civilians who wished to leave the city safely,” he wrote.

“We are now working together with [High Commissioner for Human Rights in the Russian Federation] Yana Lantratova to explore opportunities for further humanitarian initiatives. It is important to maintain this mechanism of cooperation so that we can continue helping people and saving lives,” the Ukrainian official said regarding the Russian official that coordinated on the effort.

As for Lantratova, posted that the Russian government “carried out the mission jointly with Ukraine’s Parliamentary Commissioner for Human Rights, Dmytro Lubinets, with support and coordination from US First Lady Melania Trump.”

The ceasefire came as a welcome development amid the possibility of technical discussions between the U.S., Russia and Ukraine this month, as President Donald Trump has said he’s hoping to accomplish an agreement to end the conflict.

Marc Beckman, Exclusive Senior Advisor to the First Lady, said the Oleshky agreement could pave the way for bigger things to come.

“What the First Lady has done here is put together a situation that can lead to broader, long-standing peace,” Beckman told Townhall in a recent interview.
