A sixth person was announced deceased on Tuesday after a Mexican Navy plane transporting a medical patient and several others crashed near Galveston, Texas.

Four of the people on board were naval crew members and four were civilians, including a child, according to the Mexican Navy. Two of the passengers were from Michou y Mau, a nonprofit that helps children with severe burns.

“With the support of local authorities, the body of the person who was still missing following the aircraft incident yesterday has been located; unfortunately, the person was found deceased,” officials wrote in a news release Tuesday night.

Authorities said two of the people who survived the crash are in stable condition and receiving appropriate medical attention.

The Mexican Navy explained that the “aircraft was fulfilling a humanitarian mission, focused on specialized medical transport” and had an “accident” as it approached Galveston, but did not elaborate.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said during a morning news conference that air traffic controllers lost communication for about 10 minutes before the crash.

According to the Michou y Mau’s website, the foundation provides emergency transports to children with life-threatening burns to Shriners Children’s Hospital in Galveston.
