Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz authorized the state’s National Guard to help support local law enforcement amid protests, according to CNN.

The news comes on Thursday, which is a day after an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent shot and killed a woman when she allegedly tried to ram him and other officers with her SUV.

“I’ve issued a warning order to prepare the Minnesota National Guard,” Walz previously said. “We have soldiers in training and prepared to be deployed, if necessary.”

CNN later reported that Minnesota Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan said the National Guard is on standby “out of an abundance of caution” as protests have erupted throughout the area.

“Making sure that folks are demonstrating peacefully is incredibly important. We keep each other safe and that is what is needed and necessary right now,” Flanagan told the media outlet.

Multiple videos circulating on social media appear to show ICE officers approaching the woman’s vehicle leading up to the shooting. She then drives away during the encounter and is fatally shot.

The woman was later identified as 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good.

Rep. Mary Miller, a Republican who represents Illinois, said a sitting governor who threatens to deploy the National Guard against federal law enforcement is an open act of defiance.

“The Insurrection Act exists for moments exactly like this,” Miller wrote on X. “Arrest Tim Walz.”
