WASHINGTON (TNND) — The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) that America will be able to return to the moon this year.
The flight, which would be called Artemis II, could take flight as early as Feb. 6, according to the Daily Mail.
NASA’s new administrator Jared Isaacman said there could be infrastructure on the moon in the future.
“Within the next three years, we are going to land American astronauts again on the moon, but this time with the infrastructure to stay,” he said during an interview with NBC News.
The astronauts that will be sent up in Artemis II include Victor Glover, Christina Koch Red Wiseman and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen.
However, they won’t land on the surface of the moon. The first lunar landing, which will be called Artemis III, is planned in 2027.
The Artemis program was launched during President Donald Trump’s first administration.
Last month, Trump signed an executive order titled “Ensuring American Space Superiority.”
“Superiority in space is a measure of national vision and willpower, and the technologies Americans develop to achieve it contribute substantially to the Nation’s strength, security, and prosperity,” the order reads.
“The United States must therefore pursue a space policy that will extend the reach of human discovery, secure the Nation’s vital economic and security interests, unleash commercial development, and lay the foundation for a new space age.”
