Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, the new supreme leader of Iran, said in his first comments to the public that the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed as a “tool of pressure.”

Khamenei’s statement was read on Iranian state television warned U.S. bases in the region need to be shut down or they “will be attacked,” according to CNN.

The supreme leader also said that he wanted compensation for the Israeli-US attacks last month.

“We will ask for compensation from the enemy,” Khamenei said.

“If we can’t get compensation from the enemy, we will destroy their properties as much as they have destroyed ours.”

Israel and the U.S. conducted joint strikes on Iran in late February due to concerns about the Middle Eastern country having missiles.

As a result of the strikes, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed. His son replaced him.

President Donald Trump has been critical of the new leader, saying the U.S. should be involved in picking the new leader.

Khamenei also said that Iran would go after neighboring countries in order to retaliate.

“We have had good relationship with all these 15 neighboring countries we only targeted these military bases (and) we will continue, we will have to continue and do so,” Khamenei said.

There were rumors that Khamenei’s health wasn’t good and it was even reported that he was either in a coma or dead.
