In a major moment for the Catholic Church, Pope Leo XIV celebrated his first Christmas mass as pontiff.

Father Mark Mary-Ames, director of communications and priestly studies for the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal, joined The National News Desk to mark the moment.

“No doubt it was a moment of the most profound joy. And it’s something that’s been so beautiful and a hallmark of his pontificate so far is the way in which he allows himself to really feel the moment,” Mary-Ames said.

Mary-Ames said he enjoyed the “honesty” of the current Pope.

“We see him sort of like giving a little bit of, like, kind of messing a bit a bit with some of the reporters and how they might have misinterpreted him. It’s fun to see, but, like, certainly in his pontificate

Mary-Ames’ message to individuals this holiday season is to find time for “silence and stillness.”

“Taking a moment to looking at, if you will, counting our blessings during advent, Pope Leo, he reminded us that, like, we can already see what God is doing,” Mary-Ames said.

He called having a Pope from America “darn cool.”
