HUNT VALLEY, Md. (TNND) — Senator Rand Paul said Monday he is looking to hold the confirmation hearing for Senator Markwayne Mullin, whom President Donald Trump nominated to lead the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), in the coming weeks.
“About two weeks,” the Kentucky Republican told reporters. “We’re shooting for a week from Wednesday.”
Trump announced last week that he plans to replace Kristi Noem, who served as DHS secretary from the start of his second term, with Mullin. Public approval of the administration’s management of immigration had dropped, while Noem struggled to defend her handling of various controversies.
“I’m glad he moved on,” Senator Thom Tillis, the North Carolina Republican who criticized Noem during a hearing last week, told CNN on Sunday. “Secretary Noem may have been effective as governor of South Dakota, but it’s very clear that her experience didn’t scale to something the size and scope of Homeland Security.”
Trump defended Noem in his announcement of her departure, writing in the social media post that she had “spectacular results.”
The Republican-controlled Senate will likely confirm her replacement, who only needs the support of a simple majority to pass. Multiple lawmakers have expressed support for Mullin, a junior senator since 2023.
