Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Friday gave an update on the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, saying he didn’t see either side surrendering.

“We don’t see surrender anytime in the near future by either side, and so only a negotiated settlement gives us the opportunity to end this war,” Rubio said during a press conference.

He explained that a negotiated settlement requires both sides to give up something.

“Both sides get something out of it and both sides give something,” Rubio said.

“And we’re trying to figure out what can Russia give and what do they expect to get? What can Ukraine give and what can Ukraine expect to give?”

The Trump administration throughout President Donald Trump’s first term has met with leaders of Russia and Ukraine to attempt the war that started in 2022.

It was reported on Tuesday that U.S. and Ukrainian officials showed some optimism about the latest round of discussions for a peace deal.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz also weighed in on the matter.

“In recent days, we have seen significant diplomatic momentum, perhaps the most since the war began on Feb. 24, 2022,” German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on Monday. “We now have the opportunity for a genuine peace process for Ukraine.”

Rubio said that there are still ways to go regarding peace talks.

“It can’t generally be done in the media or in press conferences,” he said. “I think we’ve made progress, but we have ways to go, and course the hardest issues are always the last issues.”
