A 29-year-old South Carolina woman was arrested after 100 animals were found abused on two properties, according to authorities.

The Lexington County Sheriff’s Department and Lexington County Animal Services announced that Julia Evans Pickett was charged with two counts of felony ill-treatment of animals.

In late December, authorities said investigators received information regarding animal welfare concerns at two Lexington County properties occupied by Pickett. Multiple types of animals were located across both properties, authorities said.

“The conditions we observed on the properties prompted the removal of all of the animals for their safety and care,” Brittany Jones, who is the director of Lexington County Animal Services, said. “Approximately 100 animals were located and removed. Some animals had, unfortunately, already died. More animals might not survive, or might have to be humanely euthanized despite ongoing care efforts.”

Investigators transported all surviving animals to facilities, where they are receiving medical care.

Authorities said Pickett was found at one of the properties and taken into custody on December 31. She was released from the Lexington County Detention Center after meeting the conditions of her bond.

The investigation remains ongoing at this time, and more charges are expected against Pickett, according to Jones.
