I know that New York is hostile toward the Second Amendment. That’s been as clear as springwater for years. Despite that, I’d like to be optimistic that they won’t become so obsessed with it that they ruin childhood over it.
And many people, even those who don’t like guns, remember their first BB gun. Mine, like many others, was a venerable Red Ryder.
Yeah, one a lot like the one Ralphie wanted in the movie A Christmas Story. Part of what I love about that movie is that I had the same gun, minus the compass in the stock, of course.
The Red Ryder isn’t particularly dangerous, especially as air guns go, and it’s a rite of passage for millions of Americans.
But Daisy, the company that sells it and other air guns, is calling out the state of New York.

The plug alone renders them useless. It’s two bills – S9215 and A10701. Contacting your legislators to voice your opposition is required to stop the removal of yet another of your rights. Hard Air magazine has more info.
Now, I get that criminals use air guns, pretend they’re real firearms, and intimidate people with the implied threat of them getting shot, even if the gun isn’t likely to do anything to the victim beyond a bruise.
But again, why are we making the rest of the people pay for the actions of a distinct minority who aren’t going to follow the rules in the first place? Any plug put in place will be removed, any required color scheme will be painted over, and the criminals will go about their merry way.
Meanwhile, thousands of young people won’t be able to learn gun safety, marksmanship, or just enjoy knocking over cans or plastic bottles.
All of this is because New York hasn’t been able to stop crime or criminals, so their answer is to just make things even worse for the law-abiding folks who live there, rather than actually cracking down on criminals. We’ve all seen the sweetheart sentences some of these monsters get, including the “trans migrant” rapist of a 14-year-old boy in Manhattan, who got a six-month time served sentence and is back out on the streets.
They can’t keep someone like that locked up, but they’ll ban the Red Ryder and similar air guns, and pretend they’re actually addressing the state’s crime problem. It’s downright disgusting, but what else can you expect from such a leftist state? Coddle the criminals, punish the law-abiding, and pretend you’re the moral one because you use people’s preferred pronouns.
At least poor old Ralphie lived in Indiana, so he wouldn’t have to put up with this particular bit of stupidity. It’s just a shame that a bunch of other kids won’t be as lucky.
