PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WJAR) — Three people are in critical condition after an overnight stabbing in Providence.
Providence police officers responded to Sawyer Street around 2:40 a.m. Sunday for reports of multiple people injured in a stabbing.
When officers arrived, they found a large crowd gathered outside the home, on the sidewalk and porch, according to police.
Neighbors said the violence is unusual for the area.
“I’ve lived here for 50 years, it’s extremely quiet,” said Scott Slater, Providence’s District 10 city councilor and a neighborhood resident.
According to others who live nearby, the commotion woke them up.
“My wife woke me up when she saw all the lights, she heard the woman scream across the street,” said Drew Navarro, another neighborhood resident.
Video shared with NBC 10 showed a large police presence on the small dead-end road as investigators worked the scene.
Police said three victims were found at the scene, a 26-year-old man with a serious cut to the abdomen, a 21-year-old man with a stab wound to the chest, and a 33-year-old man found inside the home with a stab wound to the shin.
All three were taken to Rhode Island Hospital.
“Cops were all around, saw the person hosing off the sidewalk from the blood,” Navarro said.
Police also learned of a fourth victim, another 33-year-old man, who took himself to the hospital and reported being hit in the head with a glass bottle by an unknown suspect.
Three of the four victims are currently listed in critical condition, according to police.
Slater said residents are searching for answers.
“I don’t know if it was a conflict, or a fight, but this isn’t normal for this area,” he said. “I pray for everyone’s safety and that those that are involved are brought to justice.”
The identities of the victims have not yet been released.
Providence Police Department said the investigation into the stabbings is still active and ongoing.
