HUNT VALLEY, Md. (TNND) β Senator Tim Scott, the South Carolina Republican, will run for reelection in 2028 despite having committed to ending his congressional career.
Scott’s campaign team told The National News Desk that he will seek a third full term in office, a reversal from his long-running pledge to retire after more than a dozen years in the Senate. The Post and Courier, a South Carolina newspaper, first reported his decision.
“Iβll say without any question that as I think about my own reelection in 2028, I think about all the lessons Iβve learned on the campaign trail for all these other candidates, and frankly, even in South Carolina,β Scott told the outlet. βThe more I travel the state, the more I travel the country, the more I realize the important role that we play in the majority.β
The lawmaker said in 2019 that he would leave Congress a decade later. He made a similar statement in previous years.
Scott took office in 2013, when then-Governor Nikki Haley appointed him to the seat vacated by former Senator Jim DeMint. A year later, he won a special election and was victorious in his 2016 and 2022 campaigns.
