HUNT VALLEY, Md. (TNND) — Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent insulted California Governor Gavin Newsom on Thursday.
Responding to Newsom’s recent comparison of President Donald Trump to a Tyrannosaurus rex, Bessent made his own dinosaur comparison for the governor.
“To say strange things like, ‘President Trump is a Tyrannosaurus rex,’ what the hell does that mean?” Bessent said in a Politico interview. “I could say Gavin Newsom is a brontosaurus with a brain the size of a walnut.”
Newsom told international press on Tuesday that Trump is like a T. Rex who either mates with or “devours” people. A reporter had told the governor, who was attending the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, that European leaders view their interaction with the president as a form of diplomacy.
“This is diplomacy with Donald Trump? He’s a T. rex. You mate with him or he devours you. One or the other,” Newsom replied.
Newsom attended the World Economic Forum with Trump, Bessent and other American officials. The governor accused Europeans of placating Trump, asserting that he should have brought kneepads for officials meeting with the president.
“I can’t take this complicity. People rolling over. I should have brought a bunch of kneepads for all the world leaders,” Newsom said.
“I mean, handing out crowns and handing out – I mean this is pathetic. Nobel Prizes, they’re being given away. I mean, it’s just pathetic.”
Bessent said in his interview that the governor is breaking down over some issues.
“I think Gavin Newsom may be cracking up with some of these things he’s saying. I think he may be in over his hairdo, and being on the national stage is very different than being governor of California with no signature achievements,” the secretary said.
The National News Desk requested comment from the governor but hasn’t received a response. His press office has called Bessent “Bootlickin’ Scott” since the interview, though, and mocked him on social media.
“Scott Bessent flew across the ocean to star in The Real Housewives of Davos — and can’t stop talking about how ‘hot’ he thinks @CAGovernor ‘Davos’ Daddy’ Newsom is. Weird!” the office wrote on X.
Trump criticized Newsom’s visit to Davos in a Truth Social post, claiming the governor embarrassed the U.S.
“Gavin Newscum, as a ‘Lame Duck’ Governor of a Failing State, should not be at Davos running around screaming for the attention of Foreign Leaders, and embarrassing our Country,” the president said.
“He made a mockery of himself, and everybody, including his staff, knows it!”
Newsom responded in an X post that he was living “rent free” in Trump’s head.
The governor was blocked from speaking at a U.S. event in Davos on Wednesday.
He reportedly accused the Trump administration of pressuring the U.S.’s event organizer into denying him entry, although the host rejected his claim.
