WASHINGTON (TNND) — President Donald Trump continued to sharply criticize a recent Supreme Court decision related to tariffs, warning that the ruling might result in hundreds of billions of dollars being returned to foreign governments and companies that have been “ripping off” the U.S.
Trump took to Truth Social on Friday to describe the potential financial impact as an “undeserved windfall” and called the ruling “highly disappointing.”
“I am sure that the Supreme Court did not have this in mind!” Trump wrote.
“It doesn’t make sense that countries and companies that took advantage of us for decades, receiving billions and billions of dollars that they should not have been allowed to receive, would now be entitled to an undeserved ‘windfall,’ the likes of which the world has never seen before, as a result of this highly disappointing, to say the least, ruling. Is a rehearing or readjudication of this case possible???”
During his State of the Union address on Tuesday night, Trump said his administration will keep tariffs in place by relying on alternative legal statutes. He also again argued that tariff revenue could eventually replace federal income taxes.
The Supreme Court on February 20 struck down Trump’s global tariffs in a 6-3 decision, handing him a loss on an issue crucial to his economic agenda. The court ruled Trump’s attempt to use an emergency powers law to enact the levies was not valid.
The news comes amid ongoing legal and political debates over the administration’s authority to impose sweeping tariffs without additional congressional approval.
Trump has long argued that tariffs are a tool to strengthen American manufacturing, reduce trade deficits, and protect domestic industries. Critics warn that higher import taxes could raise costs for U.S. businesses and consumers and risk retaliatory measures from trading partners.
