Trump to honor Laken Riley, other crime victims in ‘Angel Family Day’ signing

President Donald Trump will be joined by the families of victims of crimes committed by illegal migrants on Monday, in a ceremony designating an official “Angel Family Day.”

Trump will sign a proclamation declaring February 22 as “Angel Family Day,” to honor two survivors and 62 people killed by illegal migrants, the New York Post reports.

The date was chosen in remembrance of Laken Riley, who was killed by an illegal migrant on February 22, 2024.

The 22-year-old Georgia nursing student was out on a run when she was murdered by Venezuelan national Jose Ibarra, who was convicted of Riley’s death.

Riley’s death propelled Republicans in Congress to pursue the Laken Riley Act, which Trump signed into law in January 2025 as the first bill of his second term. The act requires the federal detention of illegal migrants arrested for things like burglary or theft.

Last year, Riley’s mother, Allyson Phillips, and her sister attended the State of the Union address last year. Phillips and an NYPD officer who arrested Ibarra for child endangerment are set to attend the Monday event, the Post reports.

The White House told the outlet this will be the “first event of its kind to honor angel families.”

The Post reports several victims will be honored, including Katie Abraham, Rachel Morin and Kayla Hamilton.

Abraham, a woman from Illinois, was killed in a drunk driving accident in 2025 by a Guatemalan man who did not have legal status. Morin, a Maryland mother, was killed by an illegal migrant from El Salvador while on a hike in 2023. Hamilton, a Maryland woman, was raped and murdered by an illegal migrant from El Salvador in 2022.

In May 2025, Rachel’s mother, Patty Morin, joined White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt in the White House briefing room, encouraging Congress to pass the one big, beautiful bill.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and border czar Tom Homan are also expected to attend the event alongside the families.

The proclamation comes as President Trump prepares to tout his record on immigration policy at the State of the Union address Tuesday.
