WASHINGTON (TNND) — President Donald Trump issued a sharp warning to Canadian leaders on Saturday, threatening to impose a 100% tariff if Canada moves forward with an agreement that would allow Chinese goods to enter the U.S.through Canadian ports.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump criticized Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, accusing him of attempting to turn Canada into a “drop off port” for China to funnel products into the U.S. market. Trump said such a move would have devastating consequences for Canada’s economy and society.
“If Governor Carney thinks he is going to make Canada a ‘Drop Off Port’ for China to send goods and products into the United States, he is sorely mistaken,” Trump wrote. “China will eat Canada alive, completely devour it, including the destruction of their businesses, social fabric, and general way of life.”
Trump said that any trade arrangement between Canada and China that facilitates access to the U.S. market would trigger immediate retaliation. He said the U.S. would impose a 100 percent tariff on all Canadian goods and products entering the country.
“If Canada makes a deal with China, it will immediately be hit with a 100% tariff against all Canadian goods and products coming into the U.S.A.,” Trump wrote.

The president did not cite specific negotiations currently underway between Canada and China, but framed the warning as part of his broader opposition to Chinese trade practices, which he has long argued undermine U.S. manufacturing and national security.
Trump’s threat came amid an escalating war of words with Carney as the Republican president’s push to acquire Greenland strained the NATO alliance. Trump had commented while in Davos, Switzerland, this week that “Canada lives because of the United States.” Carney shot back that his nation can be an example that the world does not have to bend toward autocratic tendencies.
Trump later revoked his invitation to Carney to join the president’s “Board of Peace” that he is forming to try to resolve global conflicts.
Trump’s push to acquire Greenland has come after he has repeatedly needled Canada over its sovereignty and suggested it also be absorbed the United States as a 51st state.
He resumed that this week, posting an altered image on social media showing a map of the United States that included Canada, Venezuela, Greenland and Cuba as part of its territory.
Carney, meanwhile, warned of a “rupture” in the world order earlier this week. During a speech at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland on Tuesday, he said powerful countries are taking advantage of weaker nations.
“It seems that every day we’re reminded that we live in an era of great power rivalry,” Carney said at the event. “That the rules-based order is fading. That the strong can do what they can, and the weak must suffer what they must.”
