Trump’s new Greenland envoy says goal is not to ‘conquer’ the territory

President Donald Trump’s newly appointed envoy to Greenland, Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry, said the U.S.’s goal in the region is not go in and “conquer” the Danish territory.

Instead, Landry said the administration is looking to go in and have conversations with the locals.

“Well, I think our discussions should be with the actual people in Greenland — the Greenlanders,” Landry said while speaking on Fox News’ “The Will Cain Show.” “What are they looking for? What opportunities have they not gotten? Why haven’t they gotten the protection that they actually deserve?”

Trump announced Landry’s appointment as special envoy, saying that “Jeff understands how essential Greenland is to our National Security, and will strongly advance our Country’s Interests for the Safety, Security, and Survival of our Allies, and indeed, the World.”

Landry will still serve as the governor of Louisiana while in this role.

The new appointment was not taken well in Europe and in Denmark.

”We have said it before. Now, we say it again. National borders and the sovereignty of states are rooted in international law,” Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and her Greenlandic counterpart, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, said in a joint statement Monday. “They are fundamental principles. You cannot annex another country. Not even with an argument about international security.”

During the early months of his presidency, Trump repeatedly called for the conquest of Greenland.

The Trump administration had not provided any details about Landry’s appointment to Congress, according to a congressional aide who was not authorized to comment publicly and spoke on the condition of anonymity, The Associated Press reported.
