U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran continue for second day as regional instability ensues

U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran continued Sunday following the killing of the Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Saturday.

Khamanei’s death has thrown the future of the Islamic Republic into uncertainty and poses the risk of creating regional instability.

On Sunday, there were explosions in Tehran as Israel makes its way through Iran’s capital.

Iran has retaliated firing missiles and drones at U.S. and Israeli military bases as well as the Saudi capital and global business hub of Dubai. Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard has made threats to launch its “most intense offensive operation” ever, targeting U.S. and Israel bases.

Meanwhile, Iran has selected a 66-year-cleric to join the leadership council that is currently governing the country until a new supreme leader is chosen.

The priority for the U.S. remains Iran’s “vast missile arsenal,” a chairman of the U.S. Intelligence Committee said.

U.S. embassies across the Middle East have told their employees to continue sheltering in place on Sunday as strikes continue.

American citizens living or traveling in the region have been advised to take similar precautions.

The State Department has issued a “worldwide caution” notice, wanting Americans abroad everywhere, but specifically in the Middle East.

Following the launch of U.S. combat operations in Iran, Americans worldwide and especially in the Middle East should follow the guidance in the latest security alerts issued by the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate,” it said.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has vowed “a non-stop air train” of strikes against Iran.
