Unearthed footage from a 2022 panel featuring James Talarico revealed that the Democrat Senate candidate told attendees “I don’t want to do anything” in Congress. Now, he’s asking voters to send him there.

In a June 2022 forum entitled “Democratic Candidate Summit Panel on Local and State Strategies,” the state legislator spoke about his desires for his political career and remarked that he was wholly interested in education policy, noting that it was a state level issue. Because of his focus, he had absolutely no desire to make the move to Washington, D.C..

“Since I was a teacher, what I care about is education policy, and that’s made at the state level, right,” Talarico told attendees. “Local school boards implement, for the most part, policy created by the state. And the federal government provides funding for education but it doesn’t do a ton of policy. So the meat of it is at the state legislative level. That’s what I want to do. That’s what I ran for. That’s where I want to stay.”

“But I’m constantly getting asked, like, don’t you want to now make your move to run for Congress, right,” Talarico continued. “And I’m like, why would I run for Congress? Like, I don’t want to do anything there, right? Now, if you’re interested in immigration or foreign policy, those things would be done at the federal level, right?”

Talarico would close out his comments during the forum by telling attendees that “to be an elected official you have to be kind of a sociopath.”

Talarico’s statement about having no interest in representing Texans at the federal level wasn’t a one-off comment. In a 2019 Facebook post, Talarico told followers that he would not run in Texas’s 31st District, saying “I have no interest in going to Washington.”

His reasoning was consistent with his 2022 statements, saying that his goal as a politician was to “fight” for his former students.

“When I left the classroom, I promised my students that I would fight for them every single day. The best place to do that is the Texas House — where most education policy is decided,” Talarico said in the Facebook post.

Now, Talarico appears to be altering that promise by instead seeking high office in the U.S. Senate. He and Republican candidate Ken Paxton will face off for control of the seat in the November midterm election.
