US deadline gives Ukraine and Russia until June to end the war: Zelenskyy

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the U.S. gave Ukraine and Russia until June to reach an agreement to end the ongoing war as renewed Russian strikes on energy infrastructure forced Ukraine’s nuclear power plants to cut output on Saturday.

“The Americans are proposing the parties end the war by the beginning of this summer and will probably put pressure on the parties precisely according to this schedule,” Zelenskyy said when speaking to reporters on Friday.

“And they say that they want to do everything by June. And they will do everything to end the war. And they want a clear schedule of all events,” he added.

Zelenskyy said the U.S. proposed holding another round of trilateral talks next week in the U.S., possibly in Florida. He said Ukraine has agreed to participate.

“Ukraine needs results, and one of the most important foundations for achieving lasting peace is effective security guarantees. Ukraine did not start this war; it is Russia that must bring it to an end. What matters is that our partners remain actively engaged, work for peace together and consider all realistic proposals. I thank the United States for the readiness to facilitate and assist,” Zelenskyy wrote on X.

“We have reviewed with the team the progress on draft documents essential for ending the war, as well as the prospects for possible new meetings in the near future. I believe more progress is needed. I have outlined our vision of the framework for further dialogue, and we work on the timeline for necessary steps. We will keep our European partners informed about the state of negotiations and the real prospects for the entire negotiation process,” he added.

Zelenskyy also said Russia presented the U.S. with a $12 trillion economic proposal, which he referred to as the “Dmitriev package,” named after Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev. Bilateral economic arrangements with Washington are part of the broader negotiations, Zelenskyy said.

Meanwhile, Russia continued its attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. Zelenskyy said “Russians launched more than 400 drones, many of them ‘shaheds,’ as well as nearly 40 missiles of various types,” during a “massive” strike. He said Russians targeted power generation and distribution facilities.

“Unfortunately, energy facilities have suffered significant damage, which has affected the energy situation across practically the entire country, resulting in major power outages,” he said on X.

“The Russians deliberately targeted, among other things, energy facilities on which depends the operation of Ukrainian nuclear power plants. This puts at risk not only our security in Ukraine, but also the shared regional and European security. We believe that partners in America, in Europe, and in other states who want peace must view this with a clear head and act accordingly. Real pressure on Russia is needed so that real changes emerge in their intentions and the overall prospects,” he added.

Ukrenergo, Ukraine’s state energy transmission operator, said the strikes marked the second large-scale attack on energy infrastructure this year and forced nuclear power plants to reduce output. Eight energy facilities in eight regions were hit, the company said.
