(TNND) — The United States offered Ukraine a 15-year security guarantee as part of a 20-point peace plan during discussions between President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at Mar-a-Lago on Monday.
Zelenskyy told reporters on Monday and later posted on X about what was achieved during his meeting with Trump.
“The President of the United States confirmed strong security guarantees,” Zelenskyy wrote. “He confirmed the details that had been developed up to this point by our negotiating teams regarding these security guarantees, and he confirmed that they would be put to a vote by the United States Congress. This is a very strong agreement.”
Zelenskyy explained that the two leaders also discussed “a package of support for Ukraine’s recovery after the war ends. An economic package.”
“This includes the entry of American business, special conditions for Ukraine’s development and reconstruction, and the development of a free trade agreement with the United States,” the Ukrainian president continued. “And we are very close to another result in the 20-point plan.”
Zelenskyy also warned that the security guarantees are not permanent and said he asked Trump to consider the possibility of extending them “30, 40, or 50 years.” The guarantees would be approved by the U.S. Congress as well as by parliaments in other countries involved in overseeing any settlement, he said.
After the meeting, Trump told reporters that Ukraine and Russia are “closer than ever before” to a peace settlement.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Monday that Russian President Vladimir Putin and Trump were expected to speak in the near future, but there was no indication that the Russian leader would speak to Zelenskyy.
French President Emmanuel Macron said Kyiv’s allies will meet in Paris in early January to “finalize each country’s concrete contributions” to the security guarantees.
“There is no alternative to peace. Together with the Americans, we share single position: the war must be ended through diplomacy, and Russia must be pressed into it – otherwise the war will continue,” Zelenskyy said on social media. “Certainly, if the war continues, the Americans, together with the Europeans, will continue to support Ukraine, because we are defending ourselves in this war, we are fighting, and we are not the aggressor.”
