WASHINGTON (TNND) — Minnesota Democratic Gov. Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey have demanded that the Trump administration pay for the “immense costs” brought on by the ICE raids, giving the federal government a $203 million quote.
“The federal government needs to pay for what they broke here. There [is] going to be accountability on the things that happened, but one of the things is the incredible and immense costs that were borne by the people of this state,” Walz said.
“The federal government needs to be responsible. You don’t get to break things and then just leave without doing something about it,” the outgoing governor continued.
Walz said that he’d be calling on Minnesota’s congressional delegation to be “doing the things necessary” to ensure that the state is reimbursed. Walz is seeking a $10 million emergency relief package for small businesses impacted by the immigration raids. The forgivable loans will range from $2,500 to $25,000 and will be granted to businesses who suffered “substantial revenue loss” during “specified dates” tied to Operation Metro Surge.
Frey echoed Walz’s calls for state and federal officials to pay for the loss in revenue and damages suffered in his city. He estimated a net loss of $203 million.
“I’m not naive to think that we’re going to get the entire amount,” Frey said.
Walz and Frey’s calls for reimbursement comes as the state lost at least $18 billion from fraud in its social services programs. The state continues to be under federal investigation for widespread fraud.
Border czar Tom Homan scoffed at Walz and Frey’s requests for reimbursements.
“A lot of things were broken, but it wasn’t because of Trump administration,” Homan said Sunday.
He also questioned Walz why he didn’t request reparations from the Biden administration for the “broken” southern border.
“Did Governor Walz speak out against that — with the overdose deaths and sex trafficking and terrorists? No.”
