Washington Monument to glow with New Year’s Eve projection show

The Washington Monument will ring in the new year with a dazzling projection show as part of the Freedom 250 celebration, a nationwide effort leading up to America’s 250th anniversary in 2026.

Beginning New Year’s Eve, the iconic monument will be illuminated with large-scale projections showcasing the nation’s history and resilience.

What to know:

  • The free event runs nightly from Dec. 31, 2025, through Jan. 5, 2026
  • On New Year’s Eve, projections are scheduled from 7 p.m. to 12:06 a.m. From Jan. 1 through Jan. 5, the monument will light up each night from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.
  • Viewing will be available throughout the National Mall
  • This is free and open to the public

Organizers said the show serves as the official kickoff to Freedom 250, a year-long commemoration of the nation’s founding ahead of the semiquincentennial in 2026.

“The illumination of the Washington Monument marks the beginning of a momentous year for our nation—250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence,” said Keith Krach, CEO of Freedom 250. “We invite every American—and every friend of America—to join this historic celebration of the triumph of the American spirit.”
