(TNND) — Elon Musk’s Grok AI chatbot featured on social media platform X, is now undergoing an investigation launched by the European Union after its Grok AI chatbot started producing nonconsensual deepfake images.
Ireland’s data privacy regulator announced the news on Tuesday after notifying X on Monday, that it is opening the inquiry under the 27-nation’s EU data privacy regulations.
This news comes amid growing scrutiny X is facing in Europe and in other parts of the world over Grok’s features.
The controversy began in early January after the chatbot started granting requests from X users to undress images of real people with its AI image generation and editing capabilities. The results showed women in transparent bikinis or revealing clothing.
Researchers also said that some images appeared to include minors, sparking concern.
In response, the company introduced restrictions on Grok, but authorities in Europe were not satisfied.
EU regulators said its investigation focuses on the creation and posting on X of “potentially harmful” nonconsensual intimate or sexualized images containing or involving personal data from Europeans, potentially including minors.
X has not responded to the news of the investigation.
The watchdog group said the investigation aims to determine whether or not X broke EU data privacy rules known as GDPR, or the General Data Protection Regulation. Under the rules, the Irish regulator can enforce the bloc’s privacy rules because X has a European headquarters in Dublin. Violations may result in large fines for the social media company.

In early February, French prosecutors raided X’s Paris office and summoned Musk for questioning. Data privacy and media regulators in Britain have also launched their own probes into X.
