BALTIMORE (WBFF) — The only blue moon of 2026 occurs this weekend, and viewing conditions in Maryland look perfect.
At 4:45 a.m. on Sunday, May 31, the moon will appear at its fullest. Skies will be mostly clear, making viewing conditions ideal.
Blue Micromoon Forecast
This will be the second full moon this month, which is referred to as a blue moon. Despite the name, the moon will not appear blue, and despite the phrase, “once in a blue moon,” blue moons are not super rare. The lunar cycle is about 29.5 days, close to a month. Because of the length, most months only have one full moon. Blue moons occur every two to three years.
The last blue moon was on August 30, 2023. That moon was also a supermoon. Supermoons are when the full moon is at its closest distance to Earth. This time, viewers will see the opposite – a micromoon. Micromoons are when the full moon is at its farthest distance from Earth, so it may appear slightly smaller.
