A 64-year-old man was sentenced 50 years in prison after a deadly shooting of a man at The Johnson Square Apartments in November 2024, the Office of the State’s Attorney for Baltimore City announced Monday.

Tyrone Epps pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a crime of violence for the deadly shooting of Paul Lee.

On June 8, 2026, Epps was sentenced to life in prison, suspending all but 50 years.

The sentence imposed today ensures that Mr. Epps will likely spend the rest of his life incarcerated for the execution-style murder of Paul Lee,” said State’s Attorney Ivan Bates, via press release. “While no sentence can ever restore what was taken from Mr. Lee’s family and loved ones, I hope this outcome provides a measure of justice and closure as they continue to mourn this tremendous loss. I commend Judge Dorsey for recognizing the significant threat this defendant poses to the community and handing down the maximum penalty under the plea agreement.

On November 13, 2024, around 8:50 a.m., Baltimore police responded to the lobby of The Johnson Square Apartments located at 501 E. Preston Street for a report of a shooting.

Upon arrival, officers found Lee suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to Johns Hopkins Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Staff at the apartment complex said Epps resided in apartment 414.

Investigators were able to recover surveillance footage of the apartment lobby that showed Epps approach Lee and attempt to engage in a verbal argument.

Lee did not appear to engage back, according to investigators.

Epps then pointed a gun at Lee while he tried to retreat.

Epps shot at Lee three times, striking him twice. At the time of the shooting, Lee was attempting to hide behind another person.

Following the shooting, Epps ran away but was later apprehended.

Epps told investigators that Lee harassed him when he first moved into the building. Then, Epps said he grew tired of Lee’s behavior and admitted to getting his gun, following Lee down into the lobby, and shooting him.

Now, he will spend the rest of his life in prison.
