Person dies after being pinned under fallen tree on Maryland state park trail

A person died late Thursday night after being pinned under a fallen tree along a state park trail in Maryland’s Montgomery County area.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) said emergency crews responded around 9 p.m. on June 11 to the area of the Matthew Henson State Park near the 3400 block of Hewitt Avenue, off Georgia Avenue, for a report of an injured person.

Officials said the victim was believed to be trapped under a fallen tree, likely between Spruce Hill Road and Regina Drive.

The fatal incident comes after storms moved through the region, leaving behind reports of downed trees and storm damage. Officials have not yet confirmed whether weather played a role in the tree falling.

A passerby reported that a pedestrian was trapped or pinned under the fallen tree, according to MCFRS spokesperson Pete Piringer.

Fire and EMS crews searched the area and found one adult victim with traumatic, life-threatening injuries.

Officials later confirmed the victim did not survive.

Montgomery County Department of Police (MCPD) officers were called to the scene.

No additional details about the victim were immediately available.
