BALTIMORE — Two days after the primary, Baltimore Sheriff Sam Cogen has conceded to retired law enforcement commander Sabrina Tapp-Harper, applauding her for winning over more voters in the race for the Democratic nomination.
In an open letter addressed to Tapp-Harper, Cogen congratulated her on becoming the first female sheriff in Baltimore Sheriff’s Department’s history.
According to the Maryland State Board of Elections, unofficial returns saw Tapp-Harper winning 55% of the vote with 24,753 votes total to Cogen’s 19,806. That includes in-person ballots and early voting. Mail-in ballots are still being counted.
“While I would have liked to continue serving for another term, I understand the importance of this moment, not just for you but for the people that you will inspire as an example and role model,” Cogen wrote. “The voters have decided that you possess the leadership and experience to serve well, and it is my sincere hope that you will be highly successful.”
