WASHINGTON (7News) — Police in Washington, D.C., said a man was arrested Thursday following a violent domestic assault at a northwest apartment that left a one-year-old child and a woman injured.
According to the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), officers responded around 5:10 p.m. to the 1300 block of Shepherd Street NW after a report of a domestic assault. When they arrived, they found a woman, as well as an infant girl who had been injured.
According to a police report, MPD said the woman told officers she had been assaulted by the child’s father. The report states the man “kicked the door open” to the apartment, chased the woman after she fled with the child, began to strike the woman several times to the face and right rib area while she was holding the baby.
Police said the suspect then lifted the 1-year-old by the neck and choked her to the “point of unconsciousness causing risk of grave bodily harm,” while taking her to a neighboring apartment.

The man reentered the apartment with the child and hit the woman several times, “causing minor lacerations to her face and rib area, police added.
When one of the neighbors asked the man why he was choking the babe, he responded, “its alright ill be back with a gun to kill y’all,” the agency’s report stated.
Officers later located and arrested the man. He is facing charges including aggravated assault, felony threats, strangulation in a domestic violence context, first-degree cruelty to children, and destruction of property.
While in custody, police said the suspect was taken to Sibley Memorial Hospital for treatment of injuries sustained to his hand when he broke down the bedroom door. There, authorities said he became agitated and damaged a hospital keyboard before kicking an officer in the leg.
The woman and child were both evaluated at area hospitals.
