
When Dan Cox won the Republican nomination for governor in 2022, his campaign exposed deep divisions within Maryland Republicans despite President Donald Trump’s endorsement. Former Gov. Larry Hogan backed then-Commerce Secretary Kelly Schulz in the primary, and several Republican elected officials expressed concern that Cox’s positions on the 2020 election being stolen, abortion restrictions and other issues would make him unelectable in heavily Democratic Maryland.
Now, four years after losing to Gov. Wes Moore by more than 30 percentage points, Cox says rising living costs and dissatisfaction with Maryland’s economy have created a different political environment.
Today, Cox has the Maryland GOP’s and Republican state lawmakers’ support and has been backed by the Republican Governors’ Association.
The Baltimore Sun spoke to the Republican gubernatorial nominee about his platform and his plans to win over Democratic voters. This interview has been edited for length and clarity.
