Kitchen knife attack erupts during family dispute at Baltimore grocery store

BALTIMORE (WBFF) — A man is facing charges of attempted second-degree murder after he allegedly stabbed his father in the face with a kitchen knife inside a popular grocery store in north Baltimore.

Court records describe how Darien Brooks, 24, followed his father into the Giant Food grocery store in the 600 block of East 33rd Street around 9:10 a.m. on July 28. Brooks was riding a bicycle. His father was riding a one-wheel hoverboard.

Surveillance videos captured footage of the father and son engaged in an argument, which escalated into a physical altercation inside of the grocery store. The charging documents for Brooks state that he repeatedly struck his father with a closed fist during the altercation.

“At that time, several security officers attempted to separate the parties but were unsuccessful,” court records state.

That’s when Brooks whipped out a kitchen knife and stabbed his father multiple times. Afterward, he ran out of the grocery store and dropped the knife in a trash can near its sliding glass doors, according to the charging documents.

Then, he sat on the curb in front of the store.

Police who arrived at the stabbing site had an ambulance take Brooks to Johns Hopkins Hospital for a medical assessment after Brooks complained of abdominal pain. A separate ambulance took his father to the same hospital, per court records.

The father of Brooks had been stabbed three times in the abdomen, twice on the right side of his face, and once in the upper right chest. First responders noted that the nerve on the right side of his face had been severed and would need to be reattached, according to the charging documents.

Court records state that police took the hoverboard and bicycle as evidence.

Police also charged Brooks with first-degree assault, second degree assault, and openly wearing and carrying a dangerous weapon with an intent to cause injury.
