MARYLAND (WBFF) — Wakefern Food Corp. has voluntarily recalled some of its Wholesome Pantry Organic Unsweetened Apple Sauce after routine FDA testing found elevated patulin levels.
Patulin is a “naturally occurring substance produced by molds that grow on damaged or bruised apples and may be present in products made from affected fruit,” according to the company.

Due to the patulin levels exceeding acceptable limits, the food should not be eaten.
The recall affects unsweetened apple sauce sold in 23-ounce plastic jar containers with the UPC Code 04119005677. The recalled products have a best-by date of June 16, 2027.

The apple sauce was distributed through Wakefern supermarket banners:
No illnesses or injuries associated with the apple sauce have been reported, according to Wakefern.
Customers can return the recalled product to the store for an immediate refund or replacement, Wakefern’s spokesperson Maureen Gillespie said via press release.
For questions or concerns, customers can call 1-800-ShopRite Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Wakefern operates in Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York and Connecticut.
