Kweisi Mfume wins reelection to U.S. House in Maryland’s 7th Congressional District

Kweisi Mfume won the U.S. House seat for Maryland’s 7th Congressional District in the general election, securing another term representing parts of Baltimore City and Baltimore County, according to the Associated Press.

Mfume has held the seat since 2020, when he returned to Congress after winning a special election to succeed the late Elijah Cummings.

Born and raised in Baltimore, Mfume earned a bachelor’s degree from Morgan State University and a master’s in international studies from Johns Hopkins University.

His public service career includes serving on the Baltimore City Council from 1979 to 1986, where he led the Committee on Health Policy and worked to diversify city government, improve safety and support business growth.

Mfume first served in Congress from 1987 to 1996 before leaving to become president and CEO of the NAACP, a position he held for nine years.

In 2020, he was elected in a special election to fill the vacancy left by the death of U.S. Rep. Elijah Cummings.

During his time in Congress, Mfume has worked on several committees, including the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and the Committee on Foreign Affairs.

He has passed legislation such as the Henrietta Lacks Enhancing Cancer Research Act, supported the Minority Business Development Agency, and helped bring federal funds to Maryland during COVID-19 relief efforts.

Mfume’s background also includes work as a radio and television personality, serving as an adjunct professor at Morgan State, and holding roles on national boards including Research America and the National Medical Association.

His career has earned him multiple awards, honorary doctorates, and even recognition as Marylander of the Year by The Baltimore Sun.
