MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. (7News) — A man charged in the wrong-way crash on Interstate 270 that killed a mother and her daughter in late August is an illegal immigrant, according to officials.
The crash took place on August 29, when Musammat Shamima Begum, 46, and Areebah Jahin, 23, were driving southbound on 270. According to Maryland State Police, a Ford Mustang, piloted by a man suspected of drunk driving, drove north in the southbound lanes and struck their vehicle, killing both Begum and Jahin.
Now, officials are saying the driver of that Mustang is an illegal immigrant. The Department of Homeland Security said US Immigration and Customs Enforcement lodged a detainer asking Maryland officials not to release the driver, identified as Jose Antonio Caballero-Nolasco.

“This illegal alien has been charged after a drunk-driving crash that killed a woman and her daughter and injured two others, including an 8-year-old girl, in Montgomery County, Maryland,” said DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin. “This tragedy was completely avoidable. Musammat Shamima Begum and Areebah Jahin should still be alive. ICE has lodged a detainer asking officials in Maryland to commit to not releasing this killer back onto our streets. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their family, and for a swift recovery for those who were injured.”
