BALTIMORE COUNTY, MD (WBFF) — With the first day of school approaching, the Baltimore County Police Department (BCoPD) is urging families to prioritize safety and shared guidance for drivers, students, and parents ahead of the school year.
For drivers, police said motorists should slow down and follow the speed limit, especially in school zones, and watch for children walking or biking to school.
Police also reminded drivers never to pass a stopped school bus with its red lights flashing and to stay alert by avoiding distracted driving.
For students, police encouraged children to use crosswalks and obey crossing guards, and to walk on sidewalks when possible.

The department also recommended wearing helmets when riding a bike or scooter and using bike lanes if available, and avoiding phones or electronic devices while walking or biking.
For parents, police advised reviewing safety rules with children regularly, ensuring children know their home address and emergency contact information, and establishing a safe route to school and practicing it with children.
BCoPD encouraged parents to stay informed about school policies and emergency procedures.
