MARYLAND (WBFF) — Authorities arrested a Baltimore Police officer after DNA evidence linked him to the on-duty rape of a woman from Edgewood, officials announced Thursday.
Harford County Sheriff’s Office said they detained Officer Daniel Oxendine on Aug. 27 following a months-long investigation.
Detectives started their inquiry on June 3, after responding to a local hospital where a woman told staff she had been sexually assaulted.
Investigators learned Oxendine was on duty in Baltimore City when he encountered the victim while handling a separate call.
According to the sheriff’s office, the woman asked for transportation back to her Edgewood home and Oxendine’s supervisor gave him permission to drive her there.
Officials said that once Oxendine arrived, he entered her apartment and sexually assaulted her.
The Harford County Sheriff’s Office reported the woman was taken to a hospital for a sexual assault kit exam, where detectives collected DNA evidence.
DNA test results returned conclusively identifying Daniel Oxendine as the offender, and detectives obtained an arrest warrant, officials reported.
Detectives, assisted by the Baltimore Police Department, arrested Oxendine on August 27 and transported him to the Harford County Detention Center.
Oxendine faces two counts of first-degree rape; two counts of second-degree rape; two counts of a law enforcement officer engaging in a sexual act with a victim or witness of an investigation; burglary with intent to commit rape; and misconduct in office.
The sheriff’s office said that, based on its investigation so far, detectives believe there could be additional offenses connected to Oxendine.
Detectives are reviewing evidence and coordinating with other agencies to determine whether he is tied to other reports.
