The Maryland State Fire Marshal is investigating a house fire in Cecil County that displaced eight individuals and resulted in the deaths of three dogs, according to officials.

The Singerly Fire Company responded to the scene on May 7 at 6:15 p.m. at 117 Huntsman Drive in Elkton.

Officials reported that the occupants of 117 Huntsman Drive arrived home to find heavy smoke and flames in the kitchen, prompting them to evacuate and call 911.

They also assisted the occupant from 115 Huntsman Drive in evacuating her home. The occupants of 119 Huntsman Drive were not home at the time of the fire.

Cecil County Animal Services responded to the scene and collected the remains of three dogs that died from smoke inhalation in the adjacent home.

Three other dogs were reported to be unharmed from this fire, and no other injuries were reported.

Officials determined that the fire was accidental, caused by unattended cooking in the kitchen, and that the smoke alarms did not activate because of a low battery.

In total, six adults from 117 Huntsman Drive and two adults from 119 Huntsman Drive were displaced.
