Cleanup underway and nearly 800 without power after severe weather in Annapolis

Severe storms that hit Annapolis late Friday left two families displaced and hundreds of customers without power, prompting a citywide cleanup and damage assessment effort that continued into Saturday.

City crews were sent to assess damage and clear debris from city locations after the storms. Two families were displaced after trees fell onto residential structures, and no injuries were reported.

Baltimore Gas and Electric reported that, as of noon, nearly 800 Annapolis customers remained without power.

Annapolis Mayor Jared Littmann said he has been in touch with BGE governmental liaison officials and noted that some substations were damaged.

“We understand that full restoration may take some time and appreciate the coordination between BGE and the City to ensure Annapolis residents and businesses can return to normal as soon as possible,” Littmann said.

The Annapolis Office of Emergency Management is coordinating the city’s response. The neighborhoods most severely impacted appeared to be West Annapolis and Admiral Heights.

Late Friday night, the Department of Public Works sent cut-and-toss teams to clear downed trees from roadways to restore traffic patterns. DPW crews completed a 12-hour overnight shift and will continue cleanup work in collaboration with BGE.

City officials urged residents to treat downed wires as dangerous. Residents were also advised not to approach or touch trees or branches that are on or near downed power lines.

Where it is safe to do so, residents may move downed branches to the roadway for pickup by DPW crews, who will be working in affected neighborhoods throughout the week. The city’s yard waste and refuse vendor will remove branches and other yard waste on the regularly scheduled pickup day, with regular rules applying, including that items must be bagged and meet size limitations.

The Annapolis Department of Planning and Zoning began work at 7 a.m. Saturday to assess damage to properties, with most reports involving only minor damage.
