All the officers are assigned to the Operations Bureau, according to the IID.
Officials said the shooting happened shortly before 1:45 am. on July 5 near the Walbrook Junction Shopping Center in the area of Denison Street and Clifton Avenue.
Around 1:30 a.m. on July 5, Baltimore Police’s helicopter Foxtrot located a vehicle that had been reported stolen during a Baltimore County carjacking.
Officers, with assistance from Foxtrot, followed the vehicle at what they described as a safe distance for about 20 minutes before it pulled over in the 3300 block of Clifton Avenue.
Officials said the driver initially opened the vehicle door as if to exit, but quickly got back inside. Officers approached and attempted to remove the driver from the vehicle, but police said he locked the doors and refused to get out.
According to police, as one officer prepared to break the vehicle’s window, another officer saw what appeared to be a gun and alerted the other officers.
Officers gave several commands to the driver and that’s when multiple officers fired their weapons, striking the driver.
Police said officers immediately rendered aid. The man was taken to a local hospital where he died from his injuries.
No officers were injured, according to the IID.
Investigators recovered what police described as a replica BB gun from the vehicle.
Police said all officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
