LAUREL, Md. (WBFF) — The Preakness Stakes will look and feel different in 2026, with Pimlico Race Course under renovation and the Triple Crown race temporarily moving to Laurel Park.
The gates open at 9 a.m. Saturday, and races will run into the evening. Post time for the Preakness Stakes is approximately 6:50 p.m.
Attendance at Laurel Park will be significantly smaller than at Pimlico. In-person attendance is capped at 4,800 two-day tickets. Last year’s Preakness attendance at Pimlico was around 63,000 people over the two days.
Even with the venue change, the race will still be run at its traditional distance of 1 3/16 miles, the shortest of the three Triple Crown legs.
The 14-horse Preakness field was officially announced Monday when post positions were drawn. Kentucky Derby winner Golden Tempo will not be in the field, with the horse’s trainers opting to skip the Preakness Stakes to allow Golden Tempo more time to recover after a win earlier this month.
The field and opening odds:
Early betting odds list Iron Honor at 9/2 as the morning-line favorite, while Taj Mahal, Chip Honcho and Incredibolt each opened at 5/1.
With Kentucky Derby winner Golden Tempo skipping the race, handicappers expect a more open and competitive field.
The event will be broadcast on NBC and Peacock. Peacock coverage begins at 1 p.m., and NBC coverage begins at 4 p.m. The Preakness Stakes itself will air on NBC just before 7 p.m.
FOX45 will have coverage throughout race day, including reports from Laurel Park, fan reactions, fashion highlights and updates leading up to the Preakness Stakes.
Fans can also follow coverage on FOX45 News social media platforms and submit their own photos and videos through Chime In.
The Triple Crown season continues with the Belmont Stakes, where horses from the Preakness field will have another opportunity to compete on racing’s biggest stage.
For Maryland racing fans, attention will also remain on the ongoing redevelopment of Pimlico and the future return of the Preakness Stakes to Baltimore.
